Technological breakthroughs are rapidly changing the global landscape, transforming relations, and shifting the balances between and among state and non-state actors. These innovations, while offering unprecedented opportunities, also present considerable risks and uncertainties, influencing defence and security perceptions, behavior, postures, and policies of all actors.
It is against this background that the Defence and Security Technologies Research Hub (DST-Hub) was created to focus on the study and analysis of technologies and innovations that impact the defence and security domains. One such area of change is the Emerging Disruptive Technologies (EDTs), whose inherent challenges, such as their dual-use nature, intangible qualities, and technical complexities and peculiarities, will be scrutinized. The real-world application and implications of EDTs will also be examined through their employment and outcomes in past and ongoing confrontations.
A parallel focus of the DST-Hub will be the implications of technological progress and innovations for defence industries. Ongoing and anticipated shifts in defense, industrial, and manufacturing capacities, processes, and approaches would be analyzed and debated with an eye to deciphering the complex and controversial implications surrounding most technological breakthroughs and significant innovations. Finally, the constant interaction between evolving technologies on the one hand and the conduct and perception of modern warfare on the other will be assessed, focusing on identifying the extent and the nature of the constant change in land, naval, air, cyber, and space warfare.
