]]> Tarik Basbugoglu is an expert in Turkish politics, US foreign policy, and broader Middle Eastern studies. He worked as a part-time lecturer in International Relations at Kadir Has University, where he taught PSIR 441: US Politics and Foreign Policy. Previously, he served as a module leader and occasional lecturer in both BA and MA programs in Social Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University from 2018 to 2025. He co-authored a journal article in Nations and Nationalism titled “From Masada to Sarıkamış: Trauma and Defeat Turn into Heroic Resistance and Ontological Security.” Additionally, he published an article in Global Discourse titled “Is Turkey a Western Nation? How the Turkish Political Elite Aimed to Appeal to the US Political Elite during the Afghan Conflict.” He also co-authored a policy report with Professor Umut Korkut for the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, analyzing the 2023 Turkish elections, titled “Twists and Turns: The Pragmatism Behind Turkey’s Foreign Policy Pivots.” Basbugoglu has previously worked as a research fellow on several EU Horizon 2020-funded projects, including RESPOND, Volunteer & Empower (VOLPOWER), and De-radicalization in Europe and Beyond: Detect, Resolve, Reintegrate. In addition to his academic work, he has contributed to book chapters, academic articles, and policy reports, and has been featured in interviews with journalists.

She completed two master’s degrees in European Union studies at Marmara University’s European Community Institute, followed by a Jean Monnet Scholarship at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Post Graduate School of Economics and International Relations, Milan, Italy. In 2009, she completed her doctorate at the Department of Public Administration, Institute of Social Sciences, Akdeniz University, with a thesis titled “The Examination of Climate Change as an Ecological Process on a Global Scale.” She has various publications on climate change, global environmental policies, environmental security, Latin America, and the European Union. He teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses such as International Environmental Issues, Environmental Politics, Regional Policies: Latin America, and Latin American Studies. He is the editor of MediTerra-Mediterranean Social Studies Journal. He is an associate professor in the Department of International Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Akdeniz University.

    ]]>     The #SecureBlackSea Project Coordination Meeting was held on 16–17 January 2026 in Vienna within the framework of the project Revisiting the Regional Cooperation Structure in the Wider Black Sea: Security Building Through NATO.

    The meeting brought together the core project team to review the project’s overall progress and to align analytical and operational components for the next phase. Discussions focused on assessing progress under Milestone 1 and Milestone 2, refining the scope and positioning of the Literature Review, evaluating fieldwork findings from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Romania, and preparing the methodological framework for the upcoming scenario-building workshop.

    Project team agreed that the project is advancing in line with its timeline and objectives, with the Literature Review, fieldwork, and scenario-building components developing in parallel and reinforcing one another. A key point of discussion was the need to clearly define the purpose, audience, and analytical contribution of the Literature Review to ensure coherence across all project outputs. The meeting emphasized that the Review should remain academically rigorous and policy-relevant, without being prescriptive or explicitly NATO-oriented, while still contributing to a deeper understanding of Black Sea security dynamics.

    Fieldwork discussions highlighted both convergences and divergences in threat perceptions, regional identities, and security practices across the four country cases. While Russia emerged as a central reference point in all contexts, the nature of perceived threats varied significantly, underscoring the limits of one-size-fits-all regional cooperation models and reinforcing the importance of critically examining regional ownership and “Black Sea-ness.”

    The coordination meeting also marked a major step forward in planning the scenario-building workshop, scheduled for June 2025. Designed as an interactive foresight exercise rather than a conventional academic event, the workshop aims to integrate empirical findings with forward-looking strategic analysis, addressing key uncertainties and drivers shaping the future of Black Sea security.

    Overall, the Vienna meeting strengthened analytical coherence across project activities, reaffirmed the balance between academic rigor and policy relevance, and established a clear roadmap for the timely delivery of forthcoming outputs within the NATO SPS framework.

    ]]>     Senem ATVUR graduated from Galatasaray University’s Department of International Relations in 2004. She completed her master’s degree in 2008 and her doctorate in 2012 at Akdeniz University’s Department of Public Administration. Her doctoral thesis focused on the impact of global water policies at the local level and the social movements that developed in response to these impacts. Between 2010 and 2011, she conducted her doctoral thesis research at the Université de Poitiers in France. Between 2014 and 2015, she conducted postdoctoral research at the Coventry University Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations in the UK with a TÜBİTAK scholarship. He has been working as a faculty member at the Department of International Relations at Akdeniz University since 2014. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020. Since 2023, he has been serving as the book review editor for the International Relations Journal. He has publications on environmental policies, climate change and water issues, ecological security, and international and regional policies.

International Management, Legislation and Society). In 2025, she received her doctoral degree at the University of Marmara, Department of International Relations.
