Meryem Özgür is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Medeniyet University. Her research focuses on international law, human rights, sovereignty, and the legal and political structure of the international order. Her work particularly examines the relationship between universality, power, and inequality in international law within the framework of critical international law, Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), and postcolonial approaches. Her research also addresses the functioning of international law in different fields and its connection to global power relations; in this context, she critically examines the seas, marine resources, and maritime governance.
