The second of three workshops to be organized within the scope of the project “Russia and Turkey in Global Perspective: The Limits of Convergence” was held on 19 April 2024 at Kadir Has University with the title “Economic, Environmental, and Energy Ties Between Russia and Turkey“.

The project aims to encourage relevant actors, including expert researchers, academics, and policymakers, to reflect on the evolving Russian-Turkish relations and to contribute to foreign policy debate in Turkey. The second workshop was attended by 24 academics, researchers, retired ambassadors, and journalists from Kadir Has University, Marmara University, Istanbul Bilgi University, European University Institute Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, Bologna University, and Heinrich Böll Stiftung Türkiye Office.

The workshop started with the opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Onur İşçi. In the first part of the workshop, speakers Oksana Antonenko, Rana Hoffman, and Mühdan Sağlam presented their views and discussed the economic, energy and environmental dimensions of Turkey-Russia relations and the effects of global dynamics on these relations. In the second part of the workshop, the discussion on the questions based on the presentations in the first part focused on the economic and energy-based interdependence between Turkey and Russia, the symmetrical/asymmetrical nature of this interdependence, the effects of the European Union and the United States on this interdependence and the effects of economic sanctions against Russia on Turkey-Russia trade volume.
