]]> Dr Yasin Çağlar Kaya completed his undergraduate studies in the Department of International Relations at Karadeniz Technical University. He obtained his master’s degree in international law from the University of Sussex and his PhD from the Department of International Relations at Karadeniz Technical University. His academic research focuses on the fields of international security and the law of the sea. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at Karadeniz Technical University. He also holds the positions of Head of the Public International Law Division and Deputy Head of Department. His research focuses on the security dimensions of international law, maritime zones, maritime delimitation, maritime disputes, and the rights and obligations of states at sea. Furthermore, within this framework, he conducts theoretical and applied research and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

]]> Dr Tacettin Çalık, Assistant Professor, completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Law, Ankara University; he obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees in the Department of Public Law at the Institute of Social Sciences, Selçuk University. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of International Law at the Faculty of Law, Pamukkale University. Çalık’s main areas of research are public international maritime law, public international law and human rights law; he has published academic papers and books on topics such as the obligations of the flag state, piracy and ship registration. He is also a specialist mediator and an accredited Med-Arb arbitrator at the TOBB Compliance and Dispute Resolution Centre.

]]> Özgenur Kara Balcı completed her LLB at Ankara University Faculty of Law and obtained both her LLM and PhD degrees at Ankara University Graduate School of Social Sciences. During her LLM studies, she joined the University of Mannheim School of Law & Economics in Germany as an exchange student with an Erasmus+ Program scholarship, and during her Ph.D. studies she conducted research at Tulane University Law School in the United States as a visiting scholar with the scholarship of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK). Since 2018, she has been working as a research assistant at the Department of the Sea and Maritime Law, Ankara University Faculty of Law. She also serves as a researcher at the Sea and Maritime Law Research Association (LexMaris).

]]> Research Assistant Mine Ezgi Çırak completed her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Law, Marmara University. She completed her master’s degree at the Department of Public Law, Institute of Social Sciences, Marmara University, by defending her thesis titled “Judicial Immunity of Heads of State from the Perspective of the International Criminal Court.” She is currently working on her doctoral dissertation titled “The Ex Aequo et Bono Remedy in International Law.” In 2018, she was appointed as a research assistant in the Department of International Law at the Faculty of Law, Pamukkale University. He continues his academic activities at the Faculty of Law at Marmara University. His areas of research focus primarily on public international law, as well as international criminal law, international maritime law, and international arbitration law.

Her research also addresses the functioning of international law in different fields and its connection to global power relations; in this context, she critically examines the seas, marine resources, and maritime governance.

Her academic research focuses on maritime law, particularly maritime safety and security, maritime cybersecurity, human rights at sea, seafarers’ rights, marine environmental protection, and liability regimes arising from maritime activities. She participates in national and international academic projects addressing contemporary challenges in maritime law. Her research particularly examines cyber-worthiness of ships, abandonment and protection of seafarers, liability and compensation for damage arising from the carriage of hazardous and noxious substances by sea, and international legal frameworks governing ship recycling and sustainable maritime practices.

He is currently pursuing his doctoral thesis, entitled ‘The Image of the Sea and Seafaring in Classical Turkish Poetry’, within the Doctoral Programme in Turkish Language and Literature at the Institute of Postgraduate Education, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University. The study aims to elucidate the process of development and transformation undergone by the image of the sea and seafaring in classical Turkish poetry up to the 16th century. In this study, which covers both mesnevis and divans, elements relating to the sea and seafaring are examined using an image-centred approach; in particular, mesnevis are analysed with reference to narrative theories (Joseph Campbell, A. J. Greimas) and semiotic analysis methods.

Between 2014 and 2015, he spent one year at the American University Washington College of Law in the USA on a TÜBİTAK scholarship to conduct research for his doctoral thesis; in 2022, he spent six months at the American University Washington College of Law in the USA on a TÜBİTAK scholarship to conduct postdoctoral research. Between 2009 and 2019, he served as a Research Assistant in the Department of International Relations, Division of International Law, at Giresun University. From 2020 to 2025, he worked as a lecturer in the Department of Logistics Management, Division of International Trade and Logistics, at Ankara University. Since September 2025, he has been serving as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, Istanbul Technical University.
